Iowa Universities’ Rankings Plummet in 2024 U.S. News Global Rankings
In a recent report by U.S. News & World Report, the University of Iowa and Iowa State University experienced significant drops in their rankings among the Best Global Universities. The University of Iowa fell 45 spots from 180th to 225th, while Iowa State University dropped 81 spots from 263rd to 344th.
The rankings, which evaluated 2,250 college campuses in 104 countries, considered various metrics such as research reputation, publications, citations, and international collaboration. The University of Northern Iowa was not included in the ranking for either year.
While the University of Iowa spokesperson emphasized the school’s focus on its global position, the criteria for global rankings differ from national rankings. The University of Iowa ranks 93rd in national universities, while Iowa State University ranks 115th.
In comparison to their peer institutions, the University of Iowa ranked below its 10 peers assigned by The Iowa Board of Regents, while Iowa State University ranked in the middle of its peers. The University of Michigan, a peer of the University of Iowa, was the only Big Ten university in the top 20 of the global list.
