AARP’s New CEO Challenges Stereotypes About Older Adults and Technology

In a world where technology seems to dominate every aspect of our lives, it’s easy to fall into the trap of assuming that older adults are not as tech-savvy as their younger counterparts. However, according to AARP’s new CEO, Myechia Minter-Jordan, this assumption couldn’t be further from the truth.

Minter-Jordan, a physician who is passionate about leveraging technology to deliver healthcare solutions to people in their homes, believes that the stereotype of older adults being technologically inept is a complete myth. In fact, she argues that older adults use technology daily in their jobs and at home, just like younger generations.

Speaking at the CES tech trade show in Las Vegas, Minter-Jordan emphasized the importance of technology in driving good health, financial security, and overall happiness for people over 50. She highlighted the AgeTech Collaborative from AARP, which connects start-ups targeting older adults with financing, training, and opportunities to test their ideas, products, and services.

The collaborative not only supports start-ups but also publishes blog posts and news updates about technology related to aging and 50-plus consumers. It hosts virtual and in-person events where founders can share their experiences and insights on navigating the early stages of their businesses.

Furthermore, Minter-Jordan pointed out the significant economic impact of the 50-plus population, which is projected to contribute $65 trillion to the global economy by 2030. This number is expected to nearly double by 2050, highlighting the immense potential for businesses targeting older adults.

Overall, Minter-Jordan’s message is clear: older adults are not only capable of embracing technology but are also a valuable demographic with significant purchasing power. As the world continues to evolve technologically, it’s essential to recognize and support the tech-savvy nature of people over 50.
