Sun Life Financial Inc (NYSE:SLF) Earnings Report Highlights

Sun Life Financial Inc (NYSE:SLF) reported its financial results for the fourth quarter of 2024, showcasing a mix of positive and challenging outcomes. The company’s underlying net income stood at $965 million for the quarter, a 2% decrease compared to the previous year, while the full-year net income reached $3.9 billion, marking a 3% increase year over year.

Despite the slight dip in net income, Sun Life Financial Inc saw its underlying earnings per share remain flat at $1.68 for Q4 2024, with a 5% increase for the full year at $6.66. The company’s underlying return on equity (ROE) was reported at 16.5% for the quarter and 17.2% for the full year, indicating a strong performance in this aspect.

One of the highlights of the report was the LICAT ratio of 152% at SLF, showcasing a robust capital position that allowed for continued share buybacks. Additionally, the company achieved a new milestone with total assets under management (AUM) reaching $1.54 trillion.

Sun Life Financial Inc experienced growth in various segments, with Group Benefits Revenue in Canada and the US increasing by 11% and 6% year over year, respectively. Individual Protection Sales in Asia also saw a boost, driven by strong sales in the region.

However, the company faced challenges in the US segment, particularly in the medical stop-loss business, which experienced adverse morbidity due to higher claims severity. Market-related factors and one-time items, including a tax-related loss and an impairment charge in Vietnam, significantly impacted reported net income.

Despite these challenges, Sun Life Financial Inc demonstrated its commitment to innovation and client impact through digital initiatives such as virtual care services in Canada and the Advisor Buddy tool in the Philippines.

Looking ahead, the company aims to address the volatility in tax-exempt income due to foreign currency fluctuations and expects positive net flows in MFS and SLC Management over the medium to long term.

Overall, Sun Life Financial Inc’s financial results for Q4 2024 reflect a mix of successes and challenges, highlighting the company’s resilience and commitment to growth in a dynamic market environment.
