The world’s top 10 smelliest foods have been measured in AUs, and the results are in! From fermented herring to stinky tofu, these dishes are not for the faint of heart.

Topping the list is Surströmming, a Swedish delicacy that emits a whopping 8070 AUs of stench. This canned, salted, and fermented herring is known for its intense odor, but some people can’t get enough of its rich flavor.

Coming in at number two is Hongeo-hoe, a fermented skate fish dish from South Korea that registers at 6230 AUs. The smell of this dish, described as reminiscent of outdoor toilets, comes from urea within the skate’s body.

Epicure Cheese from New Zealand takes the third spot with 1870 AUs. This hard cheese undergoes a three-year aging process, releasing stinky sulphurous gases during fermentation.

Other notable mentions include Kiviak from Greenland, Kusaya from Japan, and Natto, a traditional Japanese dish made from fermented soybeans.
