Construction Begins on 180-Foot Virgin Mary Statue in Poland

Construction has officially started on a 180-foot statue of the Virgin Mary in Konotopie, Poland. Once completed, it is set to become the tallest religious structure of its kind, according to Wirtalny Toruń, the tourism group overseeing the project.

The statue itself will stand at 133.2 feet tall and will be placed on a 50-foot-high pedestal shaped like a crown. This crown will not only serve as an observation deck but also as a place of pilgrimage for visitors.

Described as the model of perfect love and obedience to Christ by CatholicsComeHome.org, Mary is revered for her role in conceiving Jesus through the power of the Holy Spirit. The statue’s location near the existing Sanctuary of the Blessed Virgin Mary in Konotopie holds deep significance, as the site has long been a place of pilgrimage for worshippers.

Once completed, the Virgin Mary statue will surpass several well-known religious landmarks in height. For comparison, Christ the Redeemer in Rio de Janeiro stands nearly 100 feet tall, while Christ the King in Świebodzin, Poland, reaches 108 feet. The Statue of Liberty in New York City, the tallest statue in the U.S., stands at 151 feet.

The construction of the Virgin Mary statue is expected to take around 18 months to complete, and it is anticipated to draw visitors from far and wide to witness this impressive religious monument.

In the world of statues, the current tallest statue is the Statue of Unity in Gujarat, India, standing at an impressive 597 feet. This statue honors Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel, a key figure in India’s independence movement, and was inaugurated in 2018 by Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi. The completion of the Statue of Unity took 33 months and cost approximately US$422 million.

As construction progresses on the Virgin Mary statue in Poland, it is sure to become a significant landmark and a symbol of faith for worshippers and visitors alike.
