Ohio Tourist Bitten by Shark While Playing Football in Florida on Fourth of July
An Ohio tourist visiting Florida for the Fourth of July holiday had a frightening encounter with a shark while playing football in knee-deep water at New Smyrna Beach. The 21-year-old man was bitten on his right foot by the ocean predator, causing non-life-threatening injuries that required hospital treatment.
This incident comes on the heels of another shark attack on the same day in Texas, where four people were injured during an encounter with a shark at South Padre Island. The attacks in both states serve as a reminder of the potential dangers lurking in the ocean, especially during peak beach season.
Florida, in particular, has earned the title of the shark capital of the world, according to the Florida Museum of Natural History’s International Shark Attack File. Volusia County, where New Smyrna Beach is located, has seen the most unprovoked shark attacks in the world, with 351 incidents recorded since 1882.
As beachgoers continue to enjoy the summer sun and surf, it’s important to remain vigilant and aware of the potential risks associated with swimming in the ocean. Stay safe and always be cautious when entering the water, especially in areas known for shark activity.
