NCC Conducts Public Inquiry on Telecom Regulations to Enhance Sector Competitiveness and Innovation
The Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) recently held a two-day public inquiry to discuss three key regulatory rules aimed at advancing the country’s telecommunications sector. The event, which saw participation from both in-person and virtual attendees, highlighted NCC’s commitment to transparency and inclusivity.
Dr. Aminu Maida, the executive vice-chairman of NCC, emphasized the importance of involving stakeholders in shaping telecom regulations. He stated that the public inquiry was a demonstration of NCC’s dedication to fostering an efficient and competitive telecom industry.
The inquiry focused on three regulatory rules:
1. Telecommunications Networks Interconnect Regulations: The proposed amendments aim to enhance regulations, align with emerging technologies, and promote equitable competition by facilitating seamless communication between different networks.
2. Guidelines on Procedure for Granting Approval to Disconnect Telecommunications Operators: This rule establishes a transparent process for disconnecting telecom operators when necessary, safeguarding them from arbitrary actions and ensuring market stability.
3. Guidelines for Dispute Resolution: The revised guidelines aim to establish a fair mechanism for resolving conflicts within the telecom sector promptly.
Mrs. Chizua Whyte, the acting head of legal and regulatory services at NCC, welcomed participants and stressed the importance of adapting regulations to new technologies. The primary objective of the inquiry is to refine these regulations based on feedback from industry stakeholders to meet the evolving needs of the sector.
The NCC’s initiative in hosting this inquiry underscores its commitment to fostering a telecom landscape conducive to innovation, equitable competition, and the best interests of all stakeholders. Participants engaged in constructive dialogues, offering insights that will shape the future of Nigeria’s telecom industry. Collaborative efforts like these play a vital role in ensuring that regulations remain relevant and effective as the sector progresses.
