Tax Filing Tips and Assistance for San Mateo County Residents

As the April 15 tax filing deadline approaches, San Mateo County residents are getting a head start on submitting their individual income taxes. Among the early filers is Liza Monceda, a cabin cleaner from South San Francisco, who relies on a trusted tax preparer to navigate the complexities of U.S. tax laws.

Monceda, 61, prefers the personal touch of a tax professional over online filing, believing that her preparers can maximize her return. She is just one of many community members who turn to experts for stress-free tax filing.

One such expert is Amy Tang, the site coordinator for the College of San Mateo’s Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) program. VITA offers free tax preparation services to low and medium-income individuals, with trained students helping clients submit their taxes accurately.

While VITA can assist a wide range of clients, those with complicated income situations involving rental properties or businesses may need to seek guidance from a qualified tax preparer like Lawrence Pon, an enrolled agent and certified public accountant from Redwood City. Pon emphasizes the importance of seeking professional help to avoid errors that could lead to delays in receiving refunds.

As tax filers navigate the filing process, Pon advises staying proactive and responding promptly to any correspondence from the IRS or the state of California. He also recommends paying debts or receiving refunds electronically for added security and convenience.

With tax season in full swing, residents are encouraged to take advantage of free tax services like VITA to ensure a smooth and accurate filing process.
