Exploring Life in Southeast Asia: A Personal Reflection on 14 Years in Bangkok

After 14 years of living in Southeast Asia, Duncan Forgan, a Scottish expat, is still unsure if he’ll ever return home. Despite the challenges of bad air quality and traffic congestion in Bangkok, he shares four reasons why he continues to call Southeast Asia home.

One of the main reasons Forgan stays in Southeast Asia is the incredible food scene. From street vendors offering delicious meals for a few dollars to bustling markets filled with colorful produce, Bangkok is a food lover’s paradise. Forgan highlights the diverse options available, from spicy green papaya salad to braised pork with rice, showcasing the city’s culinary richness.

Another factor that keeps Forgan in Southeast Asia is the ability to tune out of the constant news cycle. While many Thai friends express frustration with the country’s politics and media, Forgan finds it liberating to detach from the Western news cycle and its often divisive narratives. This allows him to focus on his life in Southeast Asia without being overwhelmed by external influences.

The amazing destinations on Forgan’s doorstep also play a significant role in his decision to stay in Southeast Asia. From exploring karst scenery in Vietnam to embarking on motorbike tours, Forgan has had transcendent experiences across the region. The constant opportunity for discovery and adventure keeps him captivated by the beauty and diversity of Asia.

Lastly, Forgan admits that while he feels the call of home at times, his life in Southeast Asia has become deeply ingrained. The arrival of his son, Alexander, and the connections he has built in Asia make the idea of relocating to Scotland a daunting prospect. Despite looking forward to visiting Scotland and reconnecting with loved ones, Forgan acknowledges that his life and identity have been shaped by his experiences in Southeast Asia.

As Forgan prepares to return to Scotland for a visit, he reflects on the complexities of living abroad and the challenges of readjusting to life back home. His story serves as a reminder of the transformative power of travel and the deep connections we form with the places we call home.
