Golden Mashindi: Bridging the Gap Between Health and Business
Golden Mashindi, a recent graduate of the University of Kentucky College of Public Health, is making waves in the business world with his entrepreneurial spirit and innovative approach to bridging the gap between health and business.
Mashindi, a first-generation American with roots in Zimbabwe, recently received the College of Public Health’s Promising Practitioner Award for his potential to influence public health practice in Kentucky communities. His journey from student to business owner began during his freshman year of college when he purchased his first jet ski, sparking the idea for his business, Jet Ski Indy.
The high cost and strict age restrictions of boat rentals at the Indiana lake near his home inspired Mashindi to create a more accessible way for young people to enjoy the water. With the support of the Von Allmen Center for Entrepreneurship, Mashindi and his best friend launched Jet Ski Indy, offering jet ski rentals and deliveries across Indiana and beyond.
Despite facing challenges, including a last-minute cancellation by a marina and significant debt, Mashindi’s determination and innovative thinking led to the success and expansion of Jet Ski Indy. His unique business model of jet ski deliveries allowed customers to rent jet skis for any public body of water, leading to growth in Kentucky, Ohio, and Illinois.
As Mashindi looks to the future, he plans to pursue an MBA to further develop his entrepreneurial skills and create health care organizations that provide equal opportunities for health in Kentucky, Indiana, and Zimbabwe. He encourages students to follow their passions, take risks, and embrace challenges to foster growth and exploration.
