Jewish Leaders Push for Mask Ban in New York to Thwart Hate-Spewing Criminals
Jewish leaders in New York are making a bold push to pass a law that would prevent most mask-wearing in public in order to combat hate crimes and intimidation. The proposed bill, co-sponsored by state Assemblyman Jeffrey Dinowitz, aims to make it unlawful to hide one’s identity while harassing or intimidating others.
The Anti-Defamation League (ADL) has labeled this initiative as their top priority in the upcoming legislative session in Albany. CEO Jonathan Greenblatt emphasized the importance of holding individuals accountable for their actions, especially when it comes to spreading hate and inciting fear.
While some civil libertarians have raised concerns about potential limitations on free speech, supporters of the bill argue that masked individuals often feel emboldened to commit acts of vandalism and intimidation because their identities are concealed.
The proposed legislation would exempt individuals who wear masks for health reasons, religious purposes, or safety on the job. Penalties for intentionally wearing masks during hate-filled protests or criminal activities could range from violations to Class A misdemeanors.
The ADL is part of the #UnmaskHateNY coalition, which includes other civil rights groups like the NAACP and National Urban League. The coalition aims to outlaw “masked intimidation with intent” to target marginalized communities.
Recent incidents of antisemitic attacks in New York, including vandalism and harassment, have prompted Jewish leaders to take action. The rise in hate crimes, particularly against Jews, has sparked comparisons to the 1930s and the era of Nazism.
Supporters of the bill argue that restrictions on face-covering have historically helped expose hate groups like the Klu Klux Klan. The proposed ban on mask-wearing in public spaces is seen as a necessary step to ensure the safety and security of all New Yorkers.
Governor Kathy Hochul and state Attorney General Letitia James have expressed support for the mask ban, emphasizing the importance of public safety and accountability. With the backing of key legislators and community leaders, the push to pass this law in Albany is gaining momentum.
As incidents of masked individuals engaging in harassment and intimidation become more common, the need for accountability and relief is paramount. The #UnMaskHateNY coalition is advocating for swift action to address the escalating safety concerns on campuses, streets, and subways in New York City.
