IU Bloomington Named Best Global University in Indiana, Ranks 135th Worldwide

In the latest 2024-25 US News and World Report’s Best Global Universities list, Indiana University Bloomington has been named the best global university in the state of Indiana and ranked 135th overall out of 2,250 universities worldwide.

The prestigious ranking also highlighted IU’s strong performance in specific study areas, with the university placing in the top 50 in Economics and Business, as well as in Education and Education Research. Additionally, IU finished in the top 100 in eight out of the 31 surveyed study areas, showcasing the excellence across all departments at the university.

IU President Pamela Whitten expressed her pride in the recognition, attributing it to the groundbreaking research conducted by IU Bloomington faculty that is highly regarded by experts globally. She also emphasized the university’s strong international partnerships that contribute to its success on the global stage.

The Best Global Universities list evaluates universities based on their reputation worldwide and their contributions to global research. IU’s ranking was boosted by its strong research programs and publications, leading to an overall ranking of 109th in Global Research Reputation.

One standout area for IU was Education and Education Research, where the university secured the 38th spot globally. Dean Anastasia Morrone of the IU Bloomington School of Education credited the faculty’s respected research and the institution’s history of international collaborations for this achievement.

Notable projects like the education initiative in Puerto Rico led by education professor Carmen Medina have further enhanced IU’s global reputation. The School of Education’s presence on every continent except Antarctica underscores its commitment to globally relevant projects and collaborations.

In specific categories, IU ranked 43rd in Economics and Business, with the Kelley School of Business playing a significant role in this achievement. The university’s strong publication record and citations contributed to its high rankings in these areas.

IU shares its 135th place with South Korea’s Seoul National University, highlighting its global standing alongside other top universities. Other Indiana universities like Purdue University and Notre Dame also received notable rankings in the global list.

It’s important to note that the Best Global Universities ranking differs from US News’ National Best Universities list, which focuses more on graduation rates and performance. IU’s 73rd ranking on the National list showcases its continued excellence in various areas of higher education.

Overall, IU Bloomington’s top ranking in Indiana and its strong global performance reflect the university’s commitment to research excellence, international collaborations, and academic innovation.
