Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi Inaugurates Solar Plant in Sri Lanka and Signs Energy and Defence Agreements

Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s recent visit to Sri Lanka has sparked both excitement and controversy as he inaugurated construction work on a solar plant and witnessed the signing of energy and defense agreements between the two countries.

The construction of a 120-megawatt solar power plant, funded by India, is a significant step towards Sri Lanka’s goal of reducing its dependence on fossil fuels. This project comes at a crucial time for Sri Lanka, which faced a severe power shortage in 2022 due to financial difficulties.

In addition to the energy agreements, Modi and Sri Lankan President Anura Kumara Dissanayake also discussed defense cooperation and regional security. The two countries agreed to work together through the Colombo Security Conclave, which includes other Indian Ocean nations like Bangladesh, Maldives, and Mauritius.

Modi emphasized India’s commitment to its “Neighbourhood First Policy” and expressed support for Sri Lanka during its economic crisis. As a gesture of friendship, Modi was awarded the prestigious “Sri Lanka Mitra Vibhushana” award.

However, the agreements with India have faced criticism from some Sri Lankans who see them as a betrayal of the country’s sovereignty. Protests erupted in Colombo, with demonstrators voicing concerns about Indian domination and the potential impact on Sri Lanka’s security.

Meanwhile, China’s presence in Sri Lanka remains a point of contention, with plans to build a major oil refinery near Hambantota port. Both India and China have offered debt restructuring deals to help Sri Lanka recover from its economic challenges and rebuild its economy.

As India and China compete for influence in Sri Lanka, the country finds itself at a crossroads, balancing economic opportunities with concerns about sovereignty and security. The outcome of these agreements and projects will have far-reaching implications for the region and the global power dynamics at play.
