American Breakdance Experts Visit Nigeria as Part of U.S. Department of State’s Sports Envoy Program

Renowned American breakdance experts Macca Malik and Jacob “Kujo” Lyons recently concluded a weeklong visit to Nigeria as part of the U.S. Department of State’s Sports Envoy Program. The dynamic duo engaged with the Nigerian breakdance community in Abuja and Lagos, showcasing their expertise and sharing valuable insights on breaking as an Olympic sport.

In Abuja, the Sports Envoys met with the Nigerian Olympic Committee to discuss the global recognition of breaking as an Olympic sport and the opportunities it presents for Nigerian breakers. They also visited the School for the Deaf in Kuje, where they inspired students to form a Breakdance Club and emphasized the importance of inclusion and empowerment for individuals with disabilities.

In Lagos, Malik and Kujo conducted masterclasses at the Nation Dance Studio, providing tips and guidance to emerging and established breakers on how to prepare for competitions. They also participated in an Employability Webinar at American Spaces, discussing the potential career opportunities in breaking and other artistic forms of expression.

The highlight of their visit was the captivating public performances in Abuja and Lagos, where the Sports Envoys and workshop participants showcased their artistic brilliance through breathtaking choreography and compelling narratives. Acting U.S. Embassy Deputy Chief of Mission Joseph Zadrozny praised the Sports Envoy Program for promoting cultural exchange and enriching local communities through the universal language of dance and sports.

The Sports Envoys’ passion for breaking and their dedication to sharing knowledge with the Nigerian breaking community have been met with tremendous appreciation from sports and cultural leaders. Their visit has not only strengthened the bond between the United States and Nigeria but has also inspired the next generation of breakers to pursue their dreams with dedication and resilience.
