President-elect Donald Trump’s Legislative Agenda: One Big Bill or Two Separate Measures?

President-elect Donald Trump has adjusted his stance on pushing his major legislative objectives into one comprehensive bill, indicating a willingness to consider separate measures on topics such as taxation, border security, and energy. Despite his preference for a single bill, Trump acknowledged the possibility of passing multiple bills to expedite the legislative process.

With Republicans holding slim majorities in both the House and Senate, Trump and GOP leaders are strategizing on how to navigate the legislative landscape. Senate Majority Leader John Thune has proposed a two-track approach, with one bill focusing on border security, defense, and energy reforms, and another bill later in the year addressing tax cuts and other reforms.

House Speaker Mike Johnson and top GOP tax writer Rep. Jason Smith are advocating for consolidating all reforms into one comprehensive bill to streamline the process and minimize potential opposition. Johnson believes that House Republicans can pass the legislation by early April, within the first 100 days of a second Trump administration.

The proposed reforms include extending the 2017 tax cuts, addressing key campaign promises such as no taxes on tips or Social Security checks, and increasing spending on border security, energy production, and defense. The estimated cost of the non-tax portions of the agenda is around $100 billion, which may pose a challenge for some fiscally conservative Republicans.

Overall, the Trump administration is aiming to swiftly advance its legislative agenda through strategic planning and collaboration with Congress, with a focus on addressing key issues such as taxation, border security, and energy policy.
