New Regulations Allow E-Scooters on Irish Roads Starting 20 May

E-scooters to become legal on Irish roads, but with restrictions for under 16s

Starting 20 May, e-scooters will finally be legal on Irish roads, bringing a new mode of transport to the country. However, there are strict regulations in place, including a ban on those under 16 from using them in public spaces.

The long-awaited regulations, part of the Road Traffic and Roads Act 2023, aim to provide a legal framework for the use of e-scooters and e-bikes in Ireland. Minister for Transport Eamon Ryan emphasized the importance of these rules in ensuring the safety of all road users.

Under the new regulations, e-scooters will have a speed limit of 20kph on public roads, and only those with a maximum power output of 400W, a maximum design speed of 20kph, and a maximum weight of 25kg will be legal to use. Additionally, only one person can use an e-scooter at a time, and they cannot be fitted with a seat.

Minister of State Jack Chambers highlighted the need for clarity and safety on the roads, especially as more people are turning to e-scooters as a means of transportation. The Road Safety Authority will be launching a public information campaign to educate the public on the new regulations.

While these regulations may limit the use of e-scooters for some, they are ultimately aimed at creating a safer environment for all road users. As technology continues to evolve, it is important for regulations to keep up to ensure the safety and well-being of everyone on the road.
