Amherst’s Finance Director and Director of Senior Services Step Down
Amherst, MA – The town of Amherst is bidding farewell to two key members of its leadership team as Melissa Zawadzki, the Finance Director, and Hayley Bolton, the Director of Senior Services, are stepping down from their positions.
Zawadzki will be returning to UMass, where she will take on the role of Director of Information Technology Finance and Facilities. She previously served as the Senior Director of Human Resources at UMass Auxiliary Enterprises before her appointment as Town Finance Director in May of 2024. Town Manager Paul Bockelman praised Zawadzki for her work and stated that she will continue to assist the town in budget development and review.
In a statement, Zawadzki expressed her gratitude for the opportunity to work in Amherst, saying, “I have truly valued my time in this role; the experience has been both fulfilling and intellectually stimulating. I am grateful for the opportunity to collaborate with dedicated colleagues and engaged community members.”
Meanwhile, Bolton will be taking on a new role as the town administrator in Shutesbury starting in April. She will be replacing Becky Torres, who held the position for 15 years. Bolton has been directing Amherst’s senior services since November of 2021 and previously served as the director of the Senior Center in the Town of Bernardston.
Bolton’s appointment in Shutesbury was praised by the Select Board for her strategies to build trust with department heads, outreach to the community, and plans for quarterly reports to enhance transparency and accountability. A going-away party for Bolton is scheduled for March 28 at the Senior Center Lounge in Amherst.
The departures of Zawadzki and Bolton mark the end of an era for Amherst, but both leaders are moving on to new opportunities that will continue to showcase their talents and dedication to public service.
