U.S. Attorney for New Jersey Opens Investigation into Gov. Murphy and AG Platkin for Immigration Cooperation
The new U.S. attorney for the District of New Jersey, Alina Habba, has made a bold move by announcing an investigation into Gov. Phil Murphy and state Attorney General Matthew Platkin for allegedly not cooperating with federal agencies on immigration issues.
In an interview with Fox News’ Sean Hannity, Habba expressed her concerns about the Murphy administration’s instructions to law enforcement to not follow federal rules when it comes to dealing with undocumented immigrants. She stated, “It is instructing them to go against our federal rules, our executive orders.”
Habba’s decision to open an investigation into the governor and attorney general stems from a state directive that limits the types of voluntary assistance that New Jersey law enforcement officers can provide to federal immigration authorities. The directive prohibits New Jersey police officers from participating in federal immigration raids and from stopping, questioning, arresting, searching, or detaining individuals based solely on their immigration status.
The U.S. attorney emphasized that the focus is on removing undocumented immigrants who are criminals from the country, a stance supported by U.S. Attorney General Pam Bondi and President Trump. Habba warned that anyone who obstructs these efforts will face charges in the state of New Jersey for obstruction and concealment.
As of now, the governor’s office has not responded to requests for comment on Habba’s remarks, and the state attorney general’s office has declined to comment. The investigation into Gov. Murphy and Attorney General Platkin is sure to spark controversy and raise questions about the state’s stance on immigration enforcement.
