Celebrating Small Business Success in Michigan

Michigan Celebrates Small Business (MCSB) is gearing up to celebrate its 20th anniversary, honoring small businesses that have made a significant impact on Michigan’s economy. With over 900,000 small businesses in the state, MCSB recognizes the vital role these businesses play in the community.

One of the standout awardees this year is Elderly Instruments, a family-owned music store in Old Town Lansing. Not only is Elderly Instruments being recognized as one of the 2024 Michigan 50 Companies to Watch awardees, but they also recently won the title of America’s Top Small Business by the U.S. Chamber of Commerce. CEO Lillian Werbin credits the Michigan Small Business Development Center (SBDC) for the growth and success of their business over the years.

Another notable awardee is Apex Placement & Consulting, a staffing and placement agency based in Clawson. Founded by Jennifer Gavin in 2021, the company aims to provide flexible work opportunities and attract top talent. Gavin utilized the MEDC’s business assistance services to propel her company’s growth.

Chicken Tramper Ultralight Gear, a pioneering force in outdoor gear manufacturing, is also being recognized for their innovative products. Co-founded by Michigan Tech mechanical engineers Austin Gongos and Nathan Ackerman, the company combines lightweight design with durability. Through working with the MEDC, Chicken Tramper Ultralight Gear was able to secure grants and equipment loans to streamline their production operations.

Cerberus Security, a leading event-based security company founded by Army veteran Stephen Parent, is being celebrated as the 2024 Veteran-Owned Small Business of the Year. Parent credits the SBDC for providing invaluable guidance and advice to help the company grow and succeed.

Lastly, Black Star Farms, a winery founded in Suttons Bay, is being recognized for their growth and success over the last two decades. Managing owner Sherri Campbell Fenton reflects on the impact of the inaugural Michigan Celebrates Small Business awards gala on the winery’s early growth.

As Michigan Celebrates Small Business marks its 20th anniversary, the event continues to uplift and recognize the contributions of small businesses across the state. With a dedication to supporting small businesses and fostering entrepreneurship, MCSB shows no signs of slowing down as it looks towards the future.
