Revolutionizing Crime Scene Investigation with 3D Scanner Technology
The Corpus Christi Police Department is revolutionizing the way crime scenes are documented with their new 3D Crime Scene Scanner. This state-of-the-art technology is changing the game in forensic science, allowing investigators to quickly and accurately recreate crime scenes for evidence presentation in court.
Before the introduction of the scanner, investigators had to document scenes by hand, a process that could take hours. Now, with the new technology, they are able to obtain evidence much faster, collecting millions of data points in a single scan.
Crime Scene Investigator Jennifer Gintovt praises the device for its usefulness and ease of use in the field. The scanner produces photographs that are stitched together, allowing investigators to virtually walk through the scene as if they were on an online apartment tour.
Robert May, CCPD’s Forensic Lab Manager, highlights the impact of the technology in court, stating that it puts investigators and jurors right in the middle of the crime scene in a three-dimensional way. This capability could prove crucial in serious crime cases, even years after the crime occurred.
Currently, the CCPD’s forensics department has two scanners in use, with their crash investigators utilizing the other one. The investment in this new equipment is sure to make a significant impact on the efficiency and accuracy of crime scene investigations in Corpus Christi.
