Bolt Introduces Identity Verification Technology for Riders to Enhance Safety

In a bid to prioritize safety and security on its platform, technology ride-hailing firm Bolt has unveiled a new identity verification feature for riders. This innovative in-app tool allows passengers to verify their identity seamlessly by uploading a government-issued ID and a selfie, which is then authenticated by Bolt’s advanced algorithm.

The introduction of this identity verification technology comes at a crucial time, as e-hailing drivers in Nigeria are increasingly becoming targets for violent crimes such as armed robbery, carjacking, and kidnapping. Criminals often perceive e-hailing drivers as easy targets due to the assumption that they carry cash and possess valuable personal information about passengers.

Yahaya Mohammed, the Country Manager at Bolt, emphasized the importance of mutual trust between driver-partners and riders, stating, “Being able to verify that riders are who they say they are is the number one feature requested by driver-partners in Nigeria.” He further highlighted that the launch of rider verification is a step towards building trust and enhancing safety on the platform.

In addition to rider verification, Bolt offers a range of safety features such as trip verification, driver verification, trip details, rider profile photo, driver scores, and rider ratings. The company’s in-app safety toolkit enables drivers to share their ride details with a friend or loved one, access emergency assistance, and trigger an audio recording of their trip if they feel uncomfortable.

Furthermore, Bolt’s trip safety monitoring automatically engages with riders and drivers in-app if a vehicle remains stationary for an extended period, ensuring their well-being during the journey. The company’s proactive approach to safety includes driver alerts to flag areas with high volumes of safety incidents reported by both drivers and riders.

With the introduction of identity verification technology and a comprehensive suite of safety features, Bolt is committed to creating a secure and trustworthy environment for both drivers and riders. This move underscores the company’s dedication to investing in cutting-edge innovations that prioritize user well-being and enhance the overall ride-hailing experience.
