Alpena Downtown Alley Closure to Expand Outdoor Dining and Events

The Alpena Municipal Council recently made a decision that will transform the downtown area of Alpena, Michigan. The council voted to permanently close the alley that runs between 2nd Avenue and 3rd Avenue behind a strip of businesses including Rusty Petunias and Hopside Brewery. This closure will provide more space for these businesses to expand their outdoor offerings and enhance the overall walkability of the downtown area.

Anne Gentry, the executive director of the Alpena Downtown Development Authority, shared that crews are currently working on relocating handicap parking and dumpsters behind the businesses. Additionally, large flower boxes will be installed along the alleyway to beautify the space. The goal is to create a gathering space where people can enjoy outdoor dining, cocktails, entertainment, and various events.

The alley is already adorned with murals and a small park, and the surrounding area is evolving into its own district within downtown Alpena. Businesses are already planning how they can utilize the additional space. Hopside Brewery has added outdoor games like cornhole, while Mango’s Tequila Bar is considering adding a walk-up counter for drinks and food.

This alleyway improvement project is just one of many initiatives aimed at revitalizing downtown Alpena. A redesign of Culligan Plaza and the construction of new restroom facilities are also in the works. These changes are expected to enhance the overall appeal and functionality of the downtown area, making it a more vibrant and welcoming destination for residents and visitors alike.
