Business of Art Bootcamp at UNM-Gallup Empowers Artists to Succeed
Craftsmen and artists in Gallup, New Mexico, had the opportunity to enhance their business skills and network with industry professionals at the 2024 Business of Art Bootcamp held at The University of New Mexico-Gallup.
Luis Aragon, a third-generation silversmith, attended the bootcamp with his 8-year-old son Lance to learn more about the business side of the art world. Aragon emphasized the importance of equipping his son with the tools and skills needed to succeed in his art career.
The event featured workshops, panel discussions, and hands-on activities led by guest artists such as jewelry artist Pat Pruitt, musician Delbert Anderson, and painter Beverly Blacksheep. Participants like UNM-Gallup student Alysia Vidal and her mother Ruth found the bootcamp to be informative and inspiring, with valuable insights shared by the panelists.
The bootcamp also included workshops on topics such as photographing artwork, writing artist statements, and starting an art business, providing attendees with practical knowledge and resources to further their artistic endeavors.
Thanks to a Creative Industries Grant from the New Mexico Economic Development Department, the Business of Art Bootcamp was offered at no cost to participants, with additional incentives like gas cards to help cover travel expenses.
Event coordinator Dana Aldis highlighted the importance of supporting the creative community in Gallup and providing them with the professional help they need to succeed in the art world. The success of the bootcamp demonstrated the value of investing in the business skills of artists and craftsmen to help them thrive in their careers.
