Imaging Device Study at Hamilton Health Sciences: MIMOSA Pro for Early Detection of Pressure Injuries

The latest innovation in healthcare technology is being tested at Hamilton Health Sciences (HHS) to improve the early detection of pressure injuries, especially in patients with darker skin pigmentation. The MIMOSA Pro, a handheld imaging device developed by MIMOSA Diagnostics Inc., is designed to identify signs below the skin’s surface that may not be visible to the naked eye.

Ari Collerman, chief of interprofessional practice at HHS, highlighted the importance of this technology after a review showed a higher incidence of pressure injuries in patients with darker skin pigmentation. Pressure injuries, also known as pressure ulcers or bedsores, can lead to serious complications if left untreated, including sepsis.

Dr. Ted Scott, HHS vice president of innovation and partnerships, emphasized the hospital’s commitment to health equity and inclusion, stating, “We welcome the opportunity to test technology new to Canada that helps improve health equity for our patients.”

The MIMOSA Pro will be compared to the current standard practice of using the Braden Scale to assess the risk of pressure injuries. The study, set to launch in June, will involve multiple HHS sites and aims to determine the effectiveness of the MIMOSA Pro in early detection.

If successful, the MIMOSA Pro could become a routine tool in patient care, particularly for those at risk of pressure injuries. The study team is eager to see the results and how this technology can benefit all patient populations, with a focus on those with darker skin pigmentation.

Overall, this innovative study at HHS showcases the hospital’s dedication to advancing healthcare technology and improving patient outcomes, especially for vulnerable populations.
