NCC Seeks Stakeholder Inputs on Telecoms Regulations

In a bid to enhance the telecommunications sector in Nigeria, the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) is set to gather inputs from stakeholders on three subsidiary regulations. The NCC Executive Vice Chairman, Dr Aminu Maida, made this announcement at a two-day public inquiry that commenced in Abuja yesterday.

Dr Maida emphasized the importance of these regulatory instruments in shaping the country’s communications landscape, stating that they need to be refined to address emerging challenges, trends, and opportunities. The regulations under consideration include the telecommunications networks interconnect regulations, guidelines on the procedure for approving to disconnect telecommunications operators, and guidelines for dispute resolution.

Interconnection, according to Dr Maida, plays a crucial role in enabling seamless communication between different networks and fostering the growth of the communication industry in Nigeria. He highlighted the necessity of reviewing these regulations to keep up with technological advancements, promote competition, protect consumer interests, align with international standards, and enhance regulatory efficiency in the industry.

Mrs Chizua Whyte, the Acting Head of Legal and Regulatory Services at NCC, emphasized the need for regulatory instruments to adapt swiftly to the evolving communications industry driven by emerging technologies. She commended the collaborative efforts between the Commission and stakeholders, noting that these partnerships have led to significant advancements and will continue to propel the sector forward.

The public inquiry signifies NCC’s commitment to regulatory excellence and building a robust communications sector that supports the Nigerian economy. Stakeholders are encouraged to contribute their insights to shape a strong and dynamic industry together.
