DNA Technology Solves Nearly 50-Year-Old Murder Case in Aptos, California

The decades-old cold case of Karen Percifield, known as ‘Cookie’ to her loved ones, has finally been solved through groundbreaking DNA technology. After nearly 50 years, the murderer has been identified as Richard Sommerhalder, who was previously a suspect but never charged due to lack of evidence.

Percifield was visiting her sister in Aptos in 1976 when she went out for a walk and never returned. Tragically, she was stabbed to death, and her killer went unpunished for decades. Sommerhalder was later arrested for murdering two other women in Santa Cruz County, but only served 8.5 years in prison before being paroled and moving out of state.

Through the efforts of Othram, a company specializing in DNA analysis, Sommerhalder was finally linked to Percifield’s murder. This breakthrough in forensic evidence has brought closure to Percifield’s family, including her daughter Meadow Shumake, who was just 6 years old when her mother was killed.

Shumake expressed her relief at finally knowing the truth, calling it a “bittersweet justice.” She emphasized the importance of forgiveness, even in the face of such a heinous crime, to avoid carrying hate and resentment.

Othram’s success in solving cold cases like Percifield’s highlights the power of modern DNA technology in bringing long-awaited answers to families of victims. The company is now expanding its work to include more recent cases, offering hope to those still seeking justice for their loved ones.
