Maryland Ranks 22nd Best State in U.S. News & World Report’s Annual Ranking

Maryland has been ranked as the 22nd best state overall in terms of meeting the needs of its citizens, according to the latest ranking from U.S. News & World Report. The rankings, released on Tuesday, measure how well states serve residents across 70 metrics in eight categories including the economy, fiscal stability, education, health care, infrastructure, natural environment, opportunity, and crime and corrections.

The weighting of the categories was based on a survey of what matters most to people, with health care and education being weighted the most heavily. Maryland performed well in certain categories, ranking 7th in health care and 6th in the natural environment. However, the state ranked lower in categories such as education (20th), economy (31st), and infrastructure (33rd).

According to U.S. News, Maryland is known for its rich history, including being home to the Chesapeake Bay and the city of Baltimore. The state played a pivotal role in American history as one of the original 13 colonies and as a border state during the Civil War. Maryland is also home to numerous federal facilities and defense contractors, making it an important hub for federal workers.

The top 10 states in the ranking are Utah, New Hampshire, Nebraska, Minnesota, Idaho, Iowa, Vermont, Washington, Florida, and Massachusetts. On the other end of the spectrum, Louisiana was ranked as the lowest-ranked state, with other states such as New Mexico, Mississippi, and Arkansas also ranking among the bottom.

Overall, Maryland’s ranking in the U.S. News & World Report highlights the state’s strengths and areas for improvement in meeting the needs of its residents.
