U.S. News and World Report Releases “Best Ambulatory Surgery Centers” List for San Diego County
In a move that has caught the attention of the medical community, U.S. News and World Report has expanded its ranking and rating system to include ambulatory surgery centers. The newly released “Best Ambulatory Surgery Centers” list for San Diego County features 39 facilities, each evaluated based on their performance in four key categories: colonoscopy and endoscopy, ophthalmology, orthopedics and spine, and urology.
Using Medicare claims data analyzed by CareJourny, a health care statistical analysis firm, the publication assessed factors such as admission rates to emergency departments, cost of medical complications, death rates, and length of stay in long-term care facilities. These metrics were then used to calculate ratings for each facility, with some rising above the average mark and others falling below.
Among the standout performers in the orthopedics and spine category were the Scripps Encinitas Surgery Center and Scripps Clinic Ambulatory Surgery Center in Rancho Bernardo, both earning high-performing rankings. On the other hand, facilities like the Pomerado Outpatient Surgical Center in Rancho Bernardo had a more mixed performance, excelling in ophthalmology but receiving average and below-average ratings in other categories.
Notably, outpatient centers attached to hospitals were not included in the rankings, as they are part of the comprehensive scores awarded in the U.S. News “Best Hospitals” report. This new list provides patients in San Diego County with valuable insights into the quality of care offered at ambulatory surgery centers, helping them make informed decisions about their healthcare needs.
