U.S.-Colombia Binational Summit for Afro-Descendant Leaders at Morehouse College: Fostering Business Relationships and Economic Opportunities
The U.S.-Colombia Binational Summit for Afro-Descendant Leaders held at Morehouse College this week brought together nearly 300 Black Colombian and African American entrepreneurs in a historic gathering focused on fostering business relationships between the two communities.
Colombia’s first Black Ambassador to the U.S., Luis Gilberto Murillo, highlighted the shared cultures and challenges faced by Afro-descendants in both countries, emphasizing the need for inclusive policies and opportunities for all. The summit aimed to elevate the voices of Afro-descendant communities and promote economic progress.
Government and business leaders from both countries participated in workshops to foster connections, with a focus on empowering Black businesses. The event, hosted by the Global Black Economic Forum and produced by the Whittley Agency, featured panels and networking opportunities for entrepreneurs.
One of the attendees, Heidy Parra, a Colombian entrepreneur from Chocó, shared her experience as a business owner facing challenges due to limited access to opportunities. She expressed hope for establishing partnerships with African American cosmetics brands at the summit.
Alphonso David, president and CEO of the Global Black Economic Forum, emphasized the importance of investing in marginalized communities to achieve economic freedom. The summit, held in Atlanta, aimed to break down barriers and inspire collaboration between business leaders from both countries.
The event covered a range of topics, including affirmative action legislation and empowering Black businesses. The ties between the Black business communities in Atlanta and Colombia have been growing, with previous trade missions and collaborations paving the way for future partnerships.
As the summit concluded, attendees like Heidy Parra expressed optimism for the future, seeing the event as a starting point for building lasting relationships and opportunities. The gathering served as a platform for dialogue, collaboration, and mutual empowerment among Afro-descendant leaders from both countries.
