Michigan Bureau of Elections Investigating Livingston County Sheriff’s Office for Alleged Campaign Finance Violations

The Michigan Bureau of Elections is currently investigating allegations that the Livingston County Sheriff’s Office violated the state’s Campaign Finance Act by hosting former President Donald Trump for a “press conference” earlier this week. Thousands of residents online expressed their concerns, calling the event inappropriate.

Sheriff Michael Murphy defended the event in a Facebook video, stating that people are passionate about politics. However, Research Professor Emeritus Michael Traugott from the University of Michigan pointed out that such actions are rare because they are illegal under the Michigan Campaign Finance Act.

Sheriff Murphy, who has previously been fined for violating campaign finance laws in 2018, denied any wrongdoing and welcomed the investigation. Traugott highlighted that events like these, labeled as “remarks” or “press conferences,” may be attempts to avoid political event classifications.

If found guilty of violating the Campaign Finance Act, Sheriff Murphy could face a fine of up to $1,000. Ultimately, voters will have to decide how they feel about the situation, as Sheriff Murphy is an elected official. Stay tuned for updates on the investigation.
