Global IT Outage Causes Chaos at Airports Worldwide
The world was thrown into chaos as a massive IT outage affected airports across the globe, leading to long lines, crowded gates, and frustrated passengers. Major carriers like American Airlines, Delta Air Lines, and United Airlines issued ground stops, causing over 3,800 flights to be delayed and more than 1,400 to be canceled in the United States alone.
The outage, caused by an issue with the Microsoft cloud, also impacted businesses, police forces, public transport, and banks. While Microsoft stated that the underlying cause was fixed, residual impacts continued to affect some services. The CrowdStrike Falcon agent, a cybersecurity platform used by businesses globally, was also affected.
Passengers at airports like John F. Kennedy International Airport and Los Angeles International Airport faced uncertainty and delays, with some flights being delayed for hours. The situation was described as “chaos” by some travelers, with kiosks not working, boards not updating properly, and passengers fighting with desk agents.
Airports around the world, from Paris to Spain to Canada, reported delays and cancellations due to the global IT outage. The Paris Airport Authority, Porter Airlines, KLM Royal Dutch Airlines, and Spanish airport operator Aena were among those affected.
As airports worked to restore systems and resume normal operations, passengers were left to navigate the uncertainty and frustration of the situation. The outage served as a test of patience for travelers as they faced the challenge of dealing with the aftermath of the IT glitch that disrupted air travel worldwide.
