“Minority-Owned Cannabis Dispensary Opens in Springfield, Illinois”

The grand opening of a minority-owned cannabis dispensary in Springfield has brought excitement to the community. Shangri-La Dispensaries, located at 3128 S. Dirksen Parkway, officially opened its doors on July 11 after eight months of construction.

The store, operated by four owners, offers a wide range of products that set it apart from other dispensaries in the area. Co-owner Mit Patell expressed confidence in the decision to open in Springfield, citing the city’s demand for high-quality cannabis products.

Originally established in Missouri in 2019, Shangri-La Dispensaries marks the company’s first location in Illinois. The opening comes on the heels of Illinois celebrating $1 billion in cannabis sales earlier this month, with a significant portion coming from adult use cannabis sales.

Erin Johnson, Cannabis Regulation Oversight Officer, highlighted the positive impact of new cannabis businesses on the community, providing unique products for consumers and opportunities for ownership and employment. Tax revenue from cannabis sales has also led to over $244 million in R3 Grants for economic development and youth development in disproportionately impacted communities.

Furthermore, the state’s Cannabis Social Equity Loan Program aims to support individuals and communities historically affected by cannabis offenses by providing forgivable loans for participation in the legal cannabis industry. To date, around $22 million has been issued to program participants.

The opening of Shangri-La Dispensaries represents not only a new business venture but also a step towards economic development and social equity in Springfield. With a focus on quality products and community impact, the dispensary is poised to make a positive contribution to the local cannabis industry.
