Former French First Lady Carla Bruni-Sarkozy Charged with Pressuring Witness in Nicolas Sarkozy Case

The former French first lady, Carla Bruni-Sarkozy, has been charged with pressuring a witness in a case involving her husband, ex-President Nicolas Sarkozy, and illegal campaign financing from Libya. Bruni-Sarkozy has been placed on bail, restricting her from contacting anyone involved in the proceedings except for her husband.

The charges against Bruni-Sarkozy include witness tampering and attempting to commit fraud by deceiving magistrates investigating her husband’s alleged receipt of illegal funds during his 2007 presidential campaign. The witness in question, Ziad Takieddine, is central to accusations that Sarkozy received millions in illegal payments from the regime of former Libyan President Muammar Gaddafi.

Nicolas Sarkozy, who served as president of France from 2007 to 2012, has already been convicted in two other cases but has denied any wrongdoing. In February, an appeals court in Paris upheld a guilty verdict against Sarkozy for illegal campaign financing in his failed 2012 re-election bid. He was sentenced to a year in prison, with six months suspended. However, due to an appeal pending at the Court of Cassation, Sarkozy cannot be imprisoned as per French law.

In a separate case in 2021, Sarkozy was found guilty of corruption and influence peddling, making him the first former French president in modern history to be convicted and sentenced to prison for actions during his term. Sarkozy retired from active politics in 2017.

The legal troubles facing the Sarkozy family have captured the attention of the public and raised questions about the integrity of political financing in France. Stay tuned for updates on this developing story.
