Cartels in Mexico: Diversifying Criminal Activities Beyond Drug Trafficking

The reach of Mexico’s drug cartels extends far beyond the realm of drug trafficking, as evidenced by their involvement in a wide range of criminal activities. From extorting farmers in the avocado industry to targeting poultry vendors for protection fees, these criminal organizations have diversified their operations to maximize profits.

In a recent case in Michoacán, residents were forced to pay for high-cost internet service by a criminal group under threat of death. Despite reporting the situation to authorities and making monthly extortion payments, the criminal group continued to operate until officials raided their properties, uncovering evidence of their illegal activities.

According to security analyst David Saucedo, drug cartels have a long history of engaging in various criminal activities beyond drug trafficking. From fuel theft to extortion of tortillerías, these groups have found ways to profit from a range of industries.

The involvement of cartels in activities like fuel theft, avocado extortion, and even charging “piso” fees for protection highlights the extent of their influence and the challenges faced by businesses and individuals in Mexico. Despite efforts by authorities to combat these criminal activities, the cartels continue to find ways to exploit vulnerable sectors of society for financial gain.

As the cartels’ criminal reach continues to expand, it is clear that the fight against organized crime in Mexico is an ongoing and complex battle that requires a multifaceted approach to address the root causes of these illegal activities.
