Cleveland Mayor Justin Bibb’s Finance Chief Resigns, City Announces

CLEVELAND, Ohio — Ahmed Abonamah, the finance chief for Cleveland Mayor Justin Bibb, has tendered his resignation, effective July 19. The city announced the move in a Friday news release, but did not provide a reason for Abonamah’s departure.

Jim Hartley, assistant director of finance, will take over as finance chief on an interim basis, according to the news release. Abonamah, who was among Bibb’s first hires when he took office in 2022, has been praised for his work during his two-plus years on the job.

Bibb commended Abonamah for his leadership, expertise, and commitment to excellence, stating that he had made long-lasting improvements to the city’s budget. Abonamah, in turn, highlighted the city’s improved financial position under his watch, citing structurally balanced budgets, credit rating upgrades, and record cash reserve levels.

As finance chief, Abonamah played a key role in several of Bibb’s priority projects and initiatives, including the allocation of federal aid, police contract negotiations, and plans for the Cleveland Browns stadium. He was also instrumental in the creation of Cleveland’s new downtown tax increment financing overlay district.

Prior to joining Bibb’s cabinet, Abonamah worked for the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission in Washington D.C. He expressed his gratitude for the opportunity to serve in his adopted hometown of Cleveland and help drive economic development in the region.

The news of Abonamah’s resignation has sparked curiosity and speculation among residents and officials alike, with many wondering about the circumstances surrounding his departure. Cleveland.com has reached out to Abonamah and Bibb’s communications staff for further comment on the matter.
