Hecklers Interrupt Election Campaign Events, Airshow Reopens After Crash, Novak Djokovic Nears Record

On the first full day of election campaigning in Australia, both Labor and the Coalition faced interruptions from protesters. Prime Minister Anthony Albanese was heckled by a far-right anti-immigration vlogger during his appearance at an urgent care clinic in Opposition Leader Peter Dutton’s Dickson electorate. Meanwhile, Mr. Dutton was confronted by a protester from the climate activism group Rising Tide, marking the fifth interruption by the group in the last fortnight.

In international news, aid has begun to arrive in Myanmar following a devastating earthquake that has claimed almost 700 lives. Teams from China and Russia have landed in Yangon, Myanmar’s former capital, to assist with search and rescue operations. The earthquake, with a magnitude of 7.7, caused significant damage in Mandalay, Myanmar’s second-largest city.

Closer to home, Australia’s biggest airshow has resumed after a serious crash left an experienced pilot in critical condition. The pilot from the Paul Bennet Airshows team crashed during a solo aerobatic display near Melbourne. The Australian Transport Safety Bureau is investigating the incident, which caused the airshow to be temporarily closed.

In weather news, Tropical Cyclone Dianne is passing through northern Western Australia, bringing heavy rainfall and damaging wind gusts. Communities in the region are bracing for potential flooding, with the cyclone expected to weaken as it moves inland.

In a legal development, an Indigenous man has lost a court bid to halt a government-approved plan for the reburial of the Mungo Man and other skeletal remains. The Federal Court ruled in favor of proceeding with the plan, which aligns with a proposal from the New South Wales Heritage and Willandra Lakes Region Aboriginal Advisory Group.

Lastly, a partial solar eclipse will be visible in the Northern Hemisphere this weekend, with astronomers predicting visibility across Europe, western Africa, eastern North America, and northern Asia. Novak Djokovic is also on the verge of breaking a key record, as he is one win away from achieving his hundredth career singles title after reaching the Miami Open final. Djokovic expressed confidence in his performance leading up to the final, stating that he is playing some of the best tennis of his career.
